Cool and creamy, this traditional Classic Spinach Dip takes just minutes to make with only six ingredients!
One of my favorite things is appetizers, both to make and to eat. I love the variety, the hot and cold, the choices of small bites and flavor combinations. I am blessed with good friends and neighbors that get together a lot and give me lots of opportunities to enjoy them!
We are known for our Baked Buffalo Chicken Dip but once I started making Same Day Sourdough Bread, we realized that it is absolutely delicious with this light and creamy Classic Spinach Dip. The recipe is simple and traditional. I make it the night before and leave it in the refrigerator until the flavors deepen. This one is a classic!
About the Ingredients
- Water Chestnuts – Water chestnuts are available in the Asian foods section of the grocery store. They provide a nice crunch to the dip, giving it better texture. Some alternatives to water chestnuts that you could try are chopped artichoke hearts, baby shrimp, jicama, celery, or shredded Parmesan cheese.
- Vegetable Soup Mix – The Knorr version of the soup mix is totally our favorite for this recipe, although you can use the Leek soup mix if you prefer. You do not want to substitute Onion Soup mix for the vegetable soup mix in this recipe. The flavor is too strong and will overtake the other ingredients and you’ll end up with onion dip instead. (Which is good too but that’s another recipe!)
- Frozen Spinach – Frozen spinach is convenient but if you want to use fresh, you’ll need a pound of spinach leaves cooked to package directions and then drained as a substitute.
- Sour Cream – If you are looking to make this a little lighter, you can substitute thick Greek yogurt for the sour cream in this recipe.
How To Make Classic Spinach Dip
Drain the thawed frozen spinach by lining a colander with paper towels and dumping the thawed spinach into the colander. Wrap the paper towel around the spinach and squeeze the water out of the spinach. Remove as much of the water as you can and then put the drained spinach into a medium bowl.
Add the sour cream, mayonnaise, dried soup mix, chopped water chestnuts, and chopped green onions to the bowl.
Stir until well combined. Chill in the refrigerator for a minimum of 2 hours up to overnight.
Serve with sourdough bread chunks, assorted vegetables, or crackers. Store any leftovers in the refrigerator. Enjoy!
