Cool and creamy, this traditional Classic Spinach Dip takes just minutes to make with only six ingredients!

One of our favorite things are appetizers, both to make and to eat. We love the variety, the hot and cold, the choices of small bites and flavor combinations.

The recipe for light and creamy Classic Spinach Dip is simple and traditional. We make it the night before and leave it in the refrigerator until the flavors deepen. Always a favorite!

What You’ll Need to make Classic Spinach Dip

  • Water Chestnuts – Water chestnuts are available in the Asian foods section of the grocery store. They provide a nice crunch to the dip, giving it better texture. Some alternatives to water chestnuts that you could try are chopped artichoke hearts, baby shrimp, jicama, celery, or shredded Parmesan cheese.

  • Vegetable Soup Mix – The Knorr version of the soup mix is totally our favorite for this recipe, although you can use the Leek soup mix if you prefer. Do not substitute Onion Soup mix for the vegetable soup mix in this recipe. The flavor is too strong and will overtake the other ingredients.

  • Frozen Spinach – Frozen spinach is convenient but if you want to use fresh, you’ll need a pound of spinach leaves cooked to package directions and then drained as a substitute.

  • Mayonnaise – We use regular full fat mayonnaise in this recipe but lite mayonnaise may also be used.

  • Sour Cream – If you are looking to make this a little lighter, you can substitute thick Greek yogurt for the sour cream in this recipe.

How To Make Classic Spinach Dip

This recipe is fairly simple to put together, not requiring a lot of time or ingredients. Drain the thawed frozen spinach by lining a colander with paper towels and dumping the thawed spinach into the colander. Wrap the paper towel around the spinach and squeeze the water out of the spinach.

Sour cream, mayonnaise, dried soup mix, water chestnuts, and chopped green onions in a bowl prior to mixing.

Remove as much of the water as you can and then put the drained spinach into a medium bowl. Add the sour cream, mayonnaise, dried soup mix, chopped water chestnuts, and chopped green onions.
