Graham cracker, chopped pecans, chocolate, butterscotch and coconut wrapped in sweet and gooey caramel. Seven Layer Magic Bars are a decadent and delicious treat!
Seven Layer Magic Bars is a classic throwback recipe from the 1960’s. With seven delicious ingredients layered and then baked, they are perfect little sharable bites of rich, toasty, gooey perfection!
What you’ll need to make Seven Layer Magic Bars
- Butter – Salted butter is our go to, melted and cooled. The bars are less greasy this way!
- Graham cracker crumbs – You can make these, just put around 12 full sized honey flavored graham crackers into a food processor and process to crumbs.
- Sweetened condensed milk – NOT evaporated milk! This is what makes the gooey caramel layer that holds everything together.
- Chocolate chips – we like milk chocolate but you can use semi sweet or dark to make it a little less sweet.
- Butterscotch chips – one of our favorite things but white chocolate chips are good too!
- Chopped pecans – coarsely chopped. You can use walnuts or pistachios if you prefer.
- Shredded coconut – we use the sweetened shredded coconut but unsweetened can be used as well. You want to be sure to put it on the top so that it gets toasted in the oven. So good!
How to make Seven Layer Magic Bars
Squares, or bar cookies, are a perfect holiday and potluck food since they are typically cut into small portions and are perfect for sharing.
Seven Layer Magic Bars are the perfect combination of flavors and textures, very rich, and best served in bite sized squares.
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Generously spray a 9×13 baking pan with cooking spray and set aside.
Melt butter then allow to cool. Add graham cracker crumbs to a medium bowl and pour melted butter over the top. Stir until completely incorporated.
Spread graham cracker mixture evenly over bottom of pan and using a spatula or flat bottomed measuring cup, pack down the graham cracker layer.
Pour the sweetened condensed milk evenly over the graham cracker layer.
Layer the chocolate chips, butterscotch chips, chopped pecans and coconut over the condensed milk and push down with a spatula.
Bake in preheated oven until edges are golden brown and the sweetened condensed milk is bubbling at the edges, 23-28 minutes.
Cool for 1-2 hours and then cut into 24 bars. Store in an airtight container at room temperature. Separate layers with parchment or wax paper. Enjoy!
Make sure that you don’t skip the cooling step. The bars need to be completely cooled so that they cut nicely and don’t fall apart!
You can cool them in the refrigerator to speed up the process if that works better for you.
