Dehydrated Mini Marshmallows

Sweet & Snacky

1 Aug

Dehydrated Mini Marshmallows are a super fun and unusual snack that you can make at home with any dehydrator. They expand and become a light, airy and crunchy treat!

Experimenting with food and trying new things is a fun activity to do with kids, especially when it has delicious results. Putting mini marshmallows onto dehydrator trays is inexpensive and results in tasty little bite sized treats that are sharable and store well. Weirdly good… my kids can’t stop eating them!

What do you do with Dehydrated Mini Marshmallows?

In my house, these usually get eaten just the way they are before anyone can do anything with them because alone they are just sweet, airy, crunchy little bites of yum.

They are also delicious when added to hot chocolate because they take a while to melt and add that foamy marshmallow-y layer of flavor that everyone loves!

How to make Dehydrated Mini Marshmallows

Making Dehydrated Mini Marshmallows is an easy process. We really think that the hardest part is being patient with the dehydrating. It is really important not to rush for the best results!

Mini marshmallows can take up to 12 hours to get to the shatter point. And even when you get to that point, you still want to leave them a bit longer to be sure that they are completely done. It is so hard to wait!

Spread out the mini marshmallows across 2-3 dehydrator trays, leaving spaces between the marshmallows.

Please Note: In a perfect world, the marshmallows wouldn’t be touching each other but there are two reasons why we aren’t going to worry about that:

  • When dehydrating, the air flow from the dehydrator always moves the marshmallows around a bit.
  • Although unexpected, the marshmallows actually EXPAND rather than shrink during the dehydrating process so they end up touching anyway (see picture below).

Don’t worry about trying to keep them separated at the beginning. Throughout the process, moving them around will separate them and they will turn out great!

Dehydrate for 6-12 hours at 150 degrees until the marshmallows are no longer flexible in any way.

There are many factors that will affect the dehydrating time for your marshmallows. The factors include:

  • the type of dehydrator that you are using
  • the type of marshmallows that you are using
  • the number of trays that you use
  • climate of where you live
  • the time of year that you make them
  • humidity levels
  • temperature of your house

As they dehydrate, it is important to check them at least every couple of hours. Move them around and break them apart if they are sticking together. This will speed up the dehydrating time.

Tasting them as they dehydrate will help you find the right texture. You don’t want them to be sticky or soft, even in the middle. They need to be dehydrated all the way through!

When ready, they should shatter when you bite into them or when you crush them with your fingers.

Turn off the dehydrator, leaving the dehydrated marshmallows on the racks for up to 6 hours. This should remove any remaining moisture from the marshmallows.

Store in a jar, a bowl with a cover or a zip top bag. Enjoy!
