This Bone Dust Spice Blend BBQ Dry Rub is a staple in our house for everything grilling and smoking. A well balanced blend of spices provides the perfect flavor for almost every kind of meat!
Our family cooks in all sorts of ways but when it comes to outdoor grilling and smoking, there are really only two dry rubs that we use on a regular basis. The first one is a favorite pre-made blend that we buy called “Bad Byron’s Butt Rub and Seasoning” and the second one is this recipe for homemade Bone Dust Spice Blend BBQ Dry Rub.
We found this recipe a few years ago in a Ted Reader cookbook and quickly realized that making your own Bone Dust Spice Blend BBQ Dry Rub is cost effective and easy, and you don’t have to order it online. This rub is literally the perfect spice blend for pretty much everything and in an airtight jar, it keeps for ages!
Why Make your Own Bone Dust Spice Blend BBQ Dry Rub?
Through many years of marriage, the culinary roles in our house have become pretty established. I don’t grill, BBQ or smoke anything, ever. I leave that to my hubby because he is just amazing when it comes to that!
He has all of the barbecue and outdoor cooking necessities like the Big Green Egg, Traeger, Blackstone, regular grill, charcoal grill… everything that he needs to create fantastic foods for us outdoors.
The problem is that sometimes with the rising prices of meat, the extras like the wood chips, tools, pellets, seasonings, racks, utensils, and everything else can start to add up.
Making our own barbecue sauce and seasonings started out as something fun but also saves us money and time. Also, you can add more of what you like and take out what you don’t. This spice blend is entirely customizable to your taste!
Here’s the Secret to Making This Rub in the CHEAPEST Way Possible
There are thirteen (13) spices in this rub. Buying those little jars at the grocery store is NOT cost effective at all. When we started making this we were using up everything we had in the house and we knew there had to be another way.
We started buying spices for this at stores that offer bulk spices in bins. We literally bought everything we needed for about 25% of the cost of buying the spices in the grocery store. We actually bought too much by accident and filled up the containers in the cupboard.
You might have to look around but this option is the absolute cheapest way to make this or any other spice blend. We are in Arizona and some stores that offer bulk spices are Sprouts, Whole Foods and WinCo. They even sell those big airtight containers for the completed product. This has changed everything for us and I highly recommend that you look around for this option if you want to save money!
How can you use a Dry Rub on Meat?
There are so many ways that you can use this Bone Dust Spice Blend BBQ Dry Rub!
For traditional use on the grill, pat down the meat with a paper towel to remove the moisture then sprinkle the dry rub all over the surface of the meat. Using your hands, rub the spices into the meat. Allow to rest for 15 minutes before placing onto the grill. The natural moisture in the meat will come out and create a delicious flavored crust that flavors the meat from the outside in.
For use on the smoker, we like to rub the meat down with either olive oil or mustard first and then apply the rub in a thick layer all over the surface of the meat. This helps the flavors to meld and also helps to keep the meat moist during the long smoking process.
Create a Wet Rub by stirring in as much or as little oil (olive, canola, vegetable, etc) as you like. Stir well and allow the flavors to meld for 5-15 minutes before spreading over the surface of the meat.
How to make Bone Dust Spice Blend BBQ Dry Rub

Transfer to an airtight container and store away from heat and light in a cool, dry place. This will keep for at least six months, probably even longer but we have never tested the theory because it is so good we use it all the time! Enjoy!
